The statue will depict two hands mimicking Psy's horse-riding dance moves from his hit music video Gangnam Style, which he released in 2012. Seen from above, the statue looks like two hands wrapped around the Earth.
The Gangnam District Office plans to place the statue near the COEX shopping and exhibition center later this year with the aim of creating an iconic landmark for the area, similar to Piccadilly Circus in London (UK) or Cloud Gate (or The Bean), the famous steel structure in Chicago (USA).
This statue was designed by artist Hwang Man Seok - of the Korean Visual Information Design Association.
The Gangnam Style music video catapulted Psy to international fame nearly three and a half years ago. The music video holds the Guinness World Record for being the most “liked” video on YouTube.
Gangnam Style is also the most viewed K-pop music video of all time, with over 2.4 billion views.
