On November 26, Deputy Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long held an urgent meeting with leaders of the Department of Preventive Medicine, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, and the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City about the case of a 5-month-old girl who died after being injected with the Quinvaxem "5 in 1" vaccine.

This death occurred at the vaccination site in Hung Phu commune, Phuoc Long district, Bac Lieu province, on November 24.

Deputy Minister Nguyen Thanh Long requested the Bac Lieu Department of Health and the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City to urgently investigate and clarify the cause.

On November 26, a delegation of officials from the Pasteur Institute in Ho Chi Minh City and Children's Hospital 1 also went to Bac Lieu to participate in the investigation into the cause of death.

According to initial reports, Hung Phu Commune Health Station vaccinated 77 other children with Quinvaxem vaccine. On November 24, along with the deceased child, the health station vaccinated 17 other children who had no unusual reactions.

The batch of vaccines injected into the children was quality tested before use.

The vaccination site in Hung Phu commune meets professional procedures for vaccination safety, screening, pre-vaccination counseling, and monitoring children for 30 minutes after vaccination at the medical facility. Vaccines are stored according to regulations.

The girl's cause of death is currently under investigation.

According to the Department of Preventive Medicine, regarding reactions after Quinvaxem vaccination in this vaccination campaign (from October to present) nationwide, the rate of post-vaccination reactions: swelling, redness, pain is 0.034%; high fever: 0.187%, cyanosis: 0.032%; difficulty breathing: 0.011%; convulsions: 0.023%.

The above reactions are all lower than the rates according to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The above death was recorded among a total of nearly 400,000 doses of Quinvaxem that have been reused since October./.
