Suspension of circulation of skin cream containing banned substances

The Drug Administration of Vietnam (Ministry of Health) has just decided to suspend the circulation of B2 Acne Treatment Cream due to it containing a banned substance used in cosmetics produced by Quoc Anh Cosmetics Joint Stock Company, located in Tan Phu ward, Tan Phu district, Ho Chi Minh City.

This suspension was issued after the Central Institute for Drug Control took samples of B2 anti-acne skin cream (production date October 6, 2013, expiry date October 6, 2015, produced by Quoc Anh Company) at Phuong Chinh pharmacy (at 169 Mai Hac De, Hai Ba Trung, Hanoi) for testing.

The results showed that this product contains Fluocinolone acetonide, an ingredient banned from use in cosmetics.

The Drug Administration requested Quoc Anh Company to recall the entire batch of products above; send a recall report on the above substandard cosmetic batch to the Drug Administration before October 15, 2014.

The Department also directed the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health to supervise the recall and handle violations according to regulations.

Fluocinolone acetonide is known to be a synthetic corticosteroid used for topical treatment of skin diseases such as dermatitis and psoriasis. Fluocinolone acetonide is still used to produce topical medications but is not used in cosmetics production.

When using Fluocinolone acetonide on large areas of skin, it should not be covered with a tight bandage because it increases the risk of systemic toxicity. This substance can also cause adrenal insufficiency in patients who use large amounts of the drug and apply it to large areas for a long time or cover it with a tight bandage.

People with psoriasis should be monitored carefully because the condition may worsen or develop pustular psoriasis. Using fluocinolone acetonide on infected wounds without appropriate antibiotic treatment may cause the infection to spread./.
