The tonic effect of ginseng
In the past 40-50 years, many scientists around the world have paid attention to the tonic and body-nourishing effects of many plants in the same family as ginseng. Some plants in this family provide famous tonics and have been used by our people for a long time, such as ginseng, ivy, and notoginseng.
Polyscias fruticosa also has a tonic effect like many of its relatives. In the past, during festivals, wrestling competitions were often held. Before the competition, wrestlers would crush Polyscias fruticosa leaves with water to drink to increase their endurance and not get tired while wrestling for a long time.
The main part used as medicine is the root, taken from plants that are 3 years old or older. People often dig up the roots of the ginseng plant in the fall or winter because at this time the active ingredient is concentrated in the roots and the roots are softer.
The dug up roots are washed to remove dirt and sand, chopped and then dried or oven-dried. They can also be soaked in wine and ginger and roasted to make them fragrant. In addition to the roots, people also use the stems and leaves of the Polyscias fruticosa.
In previous years, Vietnamese scientists (Military Medical Institute) also had many research projects using ginseng as a tonic, increasing labor capacity for people with good results. As a tonic, it causes good appetite, good sleep, weight gain, helps the body recover quickly after surgery or serious illness.
Polyscias fruticosa is quite safe to use. The average dose is 0.25-0.50g at a time, 2-3 times a day, used in the form of powder (roasted, crushed, sifted into fine powder), pills, or medicinal wine.
