(Baonghean) - Just because he wanted to hold on to the love of the girl who had sworn to love him forever, Nguyen Quoc Huy recklessly kept the 10-year-old girl in his own house, and at the same time threatened the girl's mother to give him her ex-lover's phone number or else "the girl will be dismembered"...

Small in stature and with a thin face, Nguyen Quoc Huy, a resident of Cua Nam ward, was led out of the prisoner transport truck by police officers amid regretful, sympathetic, and somewhat pitiful eyes from those present at the Provincial People's Court.

Huy was born in 1988, dropped out of school after 9th grade, stayed home to play with the neighborhood youths and helped his parents with some odd jobs. In June 2008, Huy was sentenced to 9 months in prison by the Vinh City People's Court for resisting law enforcement officers. After his prison sentence, Huy returned home and worked hard. During that time, Huy met and fell in love with Truong Thi Lien, 4 years younger than Huy, who lived in the same ward. During their time together, Huy and Lien often went to the house of Trong - Binh, Lien's uncle in Quan Bau ward to play. Binh's family has a 10-year-old daughter, who is pretty, adorable and very fond of Huy and Lien.

After a period of being in love, realizing that there were many incompatibility points, Lien took the initiative to break up despite Huy's attempts to hold on. To end the relationship with Huy, Lien moved to Dong Thap province, changed her phone number and completely cut off contact with her ex-lover. Since breaking up with his girlfriend, Nguyen Quoc Huy has always lived in torment and longing. He tried many times to contact his girlfriend but could not. While tormented by the longing of a lover, Huy suddenly thought of a way to get Lien's phone number from relatives. Knowing that Trong's family had a 10-year-old daughter, who was quite close to Huy after many times visiting his house with his girlfriend, Huy thought of using the girl as a condition for her parents to provide him with the phone number and address of his ex-lover.

Thinking is doing, on the afternoon of July 4, 2013, Huy rode his motorbike to Mr. Trong's house. Seeing the little girl playing at the neighbor's house, Huy immediately called her out and told her to get on the motorbike to go buy ice cream. Because he knew her and trusted her, the little girl quickly got on the motorbike without knowing that she was being tricked. Huy took the little girl to his house, locked her in a private room, locked the door, and used his phone to call Ms. Binh, the little girl's mother, demanding that she provide him with the phone number of her ex-lover. Huy threatened: If she did not provide the phone number, the little girl would "not be left intact". Before Ms. Binh could send the phone number, Huy continued to text and threaten, "If you do not receive the phone number within 5 minutes, I will cut off the little girl's hand". Too worried about her daughter's safety, Ms. Binh followed Huy's request. Having the phone number, Huy immediately called his ex-lover and learned that the girl was in Dong Thap. In a state of confusion and infatuation, Huy asked her to fly back to Vinh City immediately. At 9pm, when he saw the baby crying out of hunger, Huy asked his family members to bring food through the window to feed the girl and tried to comfort the baby. At 12:30am the next morning, after being persuaded by his family and relatives, Huy opened the door and let the baby out of the room so that his parents could take him home. That afternoon, Huy realized his sinful actions and went to the police station to confess and confess the whole incident.

During the investigation, Ms. Binh, the victim's mother, did not request Huy to compensate for mental damage, nor did she request the police to assess the child's health damage. Before the trial took place, Ms. Binh's family also filed a petition to reduce Huy's sentence. Recently, the Provincial People's Court brought the trial to trial, Huy was prosecuted for the crime of "Child Abduction" under Point C, Clause 2, Article 120, Penal Code with a penalty of 10 to 20 years or life imprisonment. During the trial, Huy honestly confessed, admitted his guilt and cried: “Because I was still missing my ex-lover, I wanted to have her address and phone number to find a way to contact her to ease my longing, so I committed the crime. Because of my limited legal awareness, Huy did not know that he had committed a dangerous crime. His purpose in keeping the child was to get his ex-lover’s phone number, and he did not beat or threaten the child”… The victim’s representative also spoke up to ask the court to reduce his sentence so that Huy could have the opportunity to return soon and become a useful person to society.

The jury determined that Huy's crime was serious and required long-term isolation from society. However, considering that the motive for the crime was not dangerous, the defendant had actively compensated for the damage, confessed honestly, and the victim's family had also filed a petition for a reduced sentence, Huy was sentenced to 5 years in prison, below the legal penalty. Hearing the verdict, everyone present at the trial felt sorry and regretful for the young defendant. Just because of a little thoughtlessness, just because of being too infatuated, Huy had to exchange his youthful days. Huy's foolish actions are an expensive lesson for those who are blindly in love.
