The 4th Infantry Regiment (now the 4th National Defense Economic Group) was established on April 26, 1973, under the Tri Thien Front Command on the basis of merging the special infantry units of the B5 Front. From its establishment until the complete liberation of the South, the unit fought 69 battles, destroyed and disintegrated 4 Brigades, 1 security regiment, 14 companies, shot down 5 planes, destroyed 25 tanks, destroyed 37 cannons, captured 275 military vehicles, 26 cannons, 8 boats, canoes and many other equipment. Directly fought to liberate the 3 districts of Phong Dien, Quang Dien, Huong Tra and fought with other forces to liberate Thua Thien Hue.

During the Lang Son border war, the Regiment was part of the 337th Division, performing its duties in the main direction of the Division and the main direction of the "Lang Son" front. The 4th Infantry Regiment was the first unit of the 337th Division to open fire and attack, destroying the enemy, protecting the Fatherland's border.

Implementing the Party's innovation policy, since 2002, the 4th Infantry Regiment has been transformed into the 4th National Defense Economic Group under the 4th Military Region Command; by April 2015, the Group was merged and directly under the Nghe An Provincial Military Command with the task of border defense, coordinating the construction of the Ky Son National Defense Economic Zone and the Ky Son National Defense Economic Zone expanding to Que Phong district in the West and Northwest of Nghe An province.

For more than 10 years, officers and soldiers of the 4th National Defense Economic Group have contributed to fundamentally changing the lives of ethnic minorities in the National Defense Economic Zone; electricity, roads, schools, stations, irrigation, and domestic water, things that people have dreamed of for generations, have become reality, and the lives of ethnic minorities living along the border are increasingly developing and improving.

In recognition of its achievements in combat, training and implementation of economic and defense tasks, the unit has been awarded many noble prizes by the Party, the State and the Army: Infantry Battalions 1 and 2 were awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces; Infantry Regiment 4, Infantry Battalion 2 and 1 Company were awarded the First Class Military Exploit Medal; 4 Companies were awarded the Second Class Military Exploit Medal; 13 years of performing economic and defense tasks; 13 years of the Party achieving the title of Strongest Party Organization, a comprehensively strong unit; 8 years of the Determined to Win Unit; 3 years of receiving the emulation flag of the Ministry of National Defense; many collectives and individuals received other noble prizes from the Party, the State, the Ministry of National Defense, ministries, branches and the Military Region 4 Command.

In carrying out political tasks, it is necessary to uphold the spirit of self-reliance, self-strengthening, proactiveness, creativity, promote the emulation movement for good production labor, and organize and well implement projects with the motto: "productivity, quality, efficiency, practice thrift, prevent loss and waste of materials and money of the State and people".
