Possessing a unique and impressive architectural space and being the most attractive tourist destination in Hoi An, Phung Hung ancient house is preserved intact despite being 244 years old.
Phung Hung Ancient House is a 2-storey tube-shaped house with a spacious facade, located on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street (Hoi An City), next to the Japanese Covered Bridge.
This building was built by a Vietnamese merchant in 1780. He named the house Phung Hung, which was also his trading name, meaning prosperity and success in business.
In ancient times, the house was a place to trade in forest products such as cinnamon, pepper, salt, silk, ceramics, glass, etc. The current owner is the 8th generation descendant, living and preserving the ancient house.
The architecture of the house is a combination of three cultures: Japan, China and Vietnam.
The balcony and doors are in bold Chinese colors. The roof in the middle is designed in the "four seas" style, meaning four seas in one house according to ancient Japanese tradition. Wooden ribs, crossbeams, longitudinal beams, traditional two-way roofs in the front and back rooms are in Vietnamese style.
In particular, all 80 oar masts are made of ironwood and placed on extremely sturdy stone bases. Many wooden beams and rafters are elaborately and delicately carved.
Phung Hung Ancient House was recognized as a National Historical - Cultural Relic in 1993.

Phung Hung Ancient House stands out with its unique architecture, bearing bold Asian colors and imprints.Above the main door are two door eyes (god doors). The door eyes are both decorative and spiritual elements that guard the house and ward off bad things. The house frame and floor are made of ironwood and jackfruit, the end walls are built of bricks and the roof is covered with yin-yang tiles. The living room is quite spacious and has a mother-of-pearl inlaid table and chairs that are over 200 years old. The walls are decorated with many delicate carvings. To enter the inner room, one must pass through a central door, above which is a horizontal plaque "The Duc Luu Quang", meaning the virtues of ancestors are passed down and shine. On both sides of the door are ancient parallel sentences. There is a square door (trapdoor) connecting the first floor with the second floor, used to move goods upstairs during floods. This is also a relic of the architectural art and lifestyle of the ancient Hoi An merchant class, and is also a testament to the cultural exchange in Hoi An when it was a prosperous trading port. The innermost room is where the family lives. During the historic flood of 1964, this place became a safe shelter for about 100 people for 3 days and nights. The outer room of the second floor is the place of worship and family activities. The door to the porch on the 2nd floor is made in the upper-lower-bar style, with bars above and solid wood below, providing privacy while still being airy. The house has a prime "front" location, next to the Japanese Covered Bridge. The awning support is carved with carp fish, symbolizing prosperity, power and luck.Through many ups and downs, the house still retains almost intact architectural lines and interior.Inside the house are preserved many objects that have been used by generations of the family.Phung Hung Ancient House is one of the unique destinations that tourists cannot miss when visiting Hoi An.
