The Hien Luong-Ben Hai estuary and Quang Tri Citadel will receive the special National Monument certificate as the national reunification day celebration, April 30, is approaching.

Towards the 39th anniversary of the complete liberation of the South and national reunification, Quang Tri province will organize a ceremony to receive the special national relic ranking certificate for two historical relics that were places that marked many pains and losses during the war.

Accordingly, the two historical relics “Hien Luong – Ben Hai banks” and “Quang Tri Ancient Citadel” along with the memorial sites of the 81 days and nights of protecting the Ancient Citadel and Quang Tri town… have been recognized as special national relics and will receive the certificate on April 30.

Along with this activity, the People's Committee of Quang Tri province also organized the "Unification of the Country" festival, the flag-raising ceremony at Hien Luong flagpole, and many other cultural activities. Through this, it aimed to introduce to tourists from all over the country about the small land in the Central region that suffered much pain and loss during the war and the work of building the homeland in peacetime.

On April 30, there will be a boat racing festival to celebrate national reunification day at the Hien Luong relic site.

Today, the historical site on both banks of Hien Luong is one of the tourist attractions and nostalgic places for visitors from all over the world. Every year, over 20,000 people come here to visit. Going back in time, in 1954, after the Geneva Agreement was signed, our country was temporarily divided into two regions, the North and the South, with the 17th parallel (Ben Hai River, Vinh Linh District, Quang Tri Province) as the boundary. During that period, the desire to unify the country was always present, the "red thread" that urged many brave Vietnamese people to stand up and defeat the invaders.

After the country was reunified on April 30, 1975, the country was reunited, this relic was restored so that everyone could remember the heroic historical past; the aspiration for national unification of the entire nation.

Quang Tri Citadel, where the heroic 81-day and night battle between the Vietnam People's Army and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam took place, with maximum support from the US military. This was a costly battle in terms of manpower and material for both sides. Also at this place, tens of thousands of officers and soldiers fell to protect every inch of the Citadel, to protect the peace of today. That is why this place is considered the "common grave" of martyrs.

In April, many people return to Quang Tri Citadel to offer incense to pay tribute to martyrs.

After the "red summer" campaign in 1972, the entire Citadel was almost leveled. The government and people of Quang Tri province began to rebuild their homeland and heal the wounds of war. Quang Tri Citadel was also restored as a place to pay tribute to the heroes and martyrs who had fallen, sparing no blood for the nation. Currently, at the Quang Tri Citadel Museum, there are still relics and farewell letters sent by soldiers to their families during this battle.

On the morning of April 30, Quang Tri province will hold a flag-raising ceremony and receive the certificate of ranking as a special national monument at two locations: Hien Luong Flag Tower and Quang Tri Ancient Citadel Central Memorial.
