4th place team makes history in League Cup final
Fourth-tier Bradford City have beaten Aston Villa 4-3 on aggregate to reach the Capital One League Cup final. They will face either Chelsea or Swansea in the final.
The achievement made Bradford City the first fourth-tier team to reach an English League Cup final since Rochdale lost to Norwich City in the 1962 final.
"I thought we had a great chance after taking the lead in the first leg. Aston Villa played very well in the first half but we played better in the second half. It was a dream," said a happy coach Phil Parkinson.
He also praised his players' performance: "The players had a really good match and for the club this is a really big achievement."
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Matt Duke - who has made Wigan and Arsenal regret this season - said: "This is a dream, hopefully we will have a great match at Wembley."
On the other side of the front line, Aston Villa coach Paul Lambert admitted: "I feel ashamed. We will never have a better chance to qualify for a final like this."
Having won 3-1 in the first leg, Bradford travelled to Villa Park with great confidence. So, even though Aston Villa broke through in the 24th minute with a goal from striker Benteke, the away team was not too worried. In fact, they were the ones who controlled the game and scored the equalizer 1-1 in the 55th minute of the match thanks to James Hanson.
Aston Villa's subsequent efforts only helped them score a goal to increase the score to 2-1 in the final minute of the match. However, that was not enough for the home team to turn the tables, and they had to watch their opponents win a ticket to the final after losing with a total score of 3-4 after 2 matches.
The other semi-final second leg takes place tonight at Swansea, who beat Chelsea 2-0 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge.
The winner of this match will qualify for the final against Bradford on February 24 at Wembley./.
