Coal Mining Technology Innovation: Much Work to Do!
Over the past decade, from a backward, manual coal mining technology, Vinacomin has made spectacular advances in science and technology, especially in design, construction, and safety control of explosive gases, water leaks, and mine collapses... However, Vinacomin still has a lot of work to do.

Many efforts…
The most important breakthrough of Vinacomin was that after 2005, Vinacomin units implemented hydraulic support for wood in the mine, contributing to reducing losses and increasing the output of the longwall from 50,000 - 60,000 tons/year to 150,000 - 200,000 tons/year. Next, after 2008, also at Khe Cham, people saw coal loading machines producing tons of coal by machine in the tunnels. The productivity continued to be pushed up to 400,000 - 500,000 tons/year for 1 longwall. Those were truly leaps in coal loading and furnace support technology.
At the same time, Vinacomin also introduced a series of modern technological lines and equipment into the coal selection field, helping to recover millions of tons of residues in the screening every year, improving the quality of raw coal, bringing high economic efficiency and minimizing negative impacts on the ecological environment.
In particular, the introduction of an automatic methane gas control system into the mine has helped Vinacomin master the assessment of methane gas content in coal seams. Vinacomin has established a Mine Safety Center to bring the level of mine gas management technology to the level of developed countries in the world. Thanks to that, a series of centralized automatic methane gas monitoring systems have been put into operation in most underground mines and connected to the internet for remote monitoring. These are remarkable achievements. However, this is only a rather spectacular transformation. To keep up with the advanced technology of developed countries, Vinacomin still has a lot to do.
Vinacomin is actively directing its units to urgently implement a number of state-level science and technology projects on the design, construction and experimental exploitation of an underground mine to find solutions for coal mining in the Red River Delta. At the same time, research, exploit and effectively use science and technology funds close to production. Continue to promote training of staff, access to advanced science and technology in the world. |
…but not as expected
In fact, the rate of coal mined by mechanized technology as well as the number of meters of mined by machines of Vinacomin is still low. Some synchronized mechanized lines (CGH) using Vinaalta support applied at Nam Mau and Vang Danh coal companies, 2ANSH applied at Uong Bi and Mao Khe coal companies have not yet reached the designed capacity due to complex geological conditions, replacement equipment and materials have not been timely. Although there was a time when Nam Mau's CGH longwall was operating stably with an output of about 35,000 tons/month. Some suitable types of technology continue to be applied at units with high mining output such as: Mobile hydraulic racks in the form of frames and chains account for about 21% of mining output; XDY mobile hydraulic racks account for 27-29% of mining output; single hydraulic columns account for 21-24% of coal mining output.
Similarly, the volume of tunnel meters dug by machine is still low. Currently, the work of breaking coal and rock is mainly done by drilling and blasting, using hand-held electric drills or pneumatic drills. Units have used roadheaders to dig coal tunnels, but the volume of tunnel meters dug by machine is still low; for digging stone tunnels, 1-2 boom drills are used to mechanize the work of drilling blast holes. Coal is loaded and unloaded by side-loading excavators, 1PPN-5 excavators, P60-B rock scrapers, etc.
Vinacomin’s goal in the coming time is to develop and apply mechanized coal and mineral mining technology, and mining technology solutions in complex geological conditions. In addition, Vinacomin advocates developing deep selection and processing technology to increase the value of coal and mineral use. Regarding mechanics, Vinacomin focuses on designing and manufacturing localized mechanical products, machinery, and electrical equipment. In addition, Vinacomin will also invest in issues related to the exploitation and rational use of resources, safety, environmental protection, energy saving, etc.
