The Americans got off to a flying start as Carli Lloyd scored twice in just five minutes. Lauren Holiday volleyed home before Carli Lloyd completed her hat-trick to give the US a 4-0 lead just 16 minutes into the game.
World Cup 2011 champions Japan tried to reduce the deficit with two consecutive goals through Yuki Ogimi and an own goal by Julie Johnston. However, any hopes of the Asian representative were ended by Tobin Heath's goal to make it 5-2 early in the second half.
The match between the US and Japan also went down in history as the highest-scoring Women's World Cup final. The highlight was Carli Lloyd's 50-meter wonder goal that made it 4-0.
The United States won the 2015 World Cup in Canada, becoming the first country to win the women’s soccer tournament three times, after 1991 and 1999. The victory was made even sweeter by avenging their defeat to Japan in the final four years ago.
