Waiting for the first meteor shower of 2014 on the morning of January 3

According to Mr. Dang Vu Tuan Son, head of the Vietnam Young Astronomy Club (VACA), the first meteor shower of 2014 will take place on the morning of January 3-4.

Talking to reportersVietnam+,Mr. Son said that the meteor shower that will take place tomorrow morning is called Quadrantids. This is a medium-sized meteor shower with a maximum density at its peak of about 30-40 meteors/hour.

This meteor shower is centered around the constellation Bootes (the Bear Hunter).

According to Mr. Son, the Quadrantids meteor shower occurs at the beginning of the lunar month, so Vietnamese astronomy enthusiasts have many opportunities to observe this natural phenomenon without being hindered by moonlight. In addition, the weather in many regions across the country in recent days has been quite favorable.

However, to be able to observe well, astronomy lovers must choose a location with a wide viewing angle, little light from street lights or high-rise buildings, etc., and limit pollution.
Between 2 and 4 a.m., when the constellation Bootes is high in the sky, viewers can look to the eastern sky to observe the Quadrantids meteor shower.

Mr. Son also shared his experience, observers can base on the fact that if they can count a few dozen stars in the sky, they will have the opportunity to see a meteor shower (when the sky will not be cloudy)./.
