Being married into the same family, out of jealousy, Trang stole Giang's money many times and even threw a pot of boiling water on the bed.

On the afternoon of November 14, the Hanoi People's Court opened an appeal hearing to consider the petition for a reduced sentence of defendant Chu Thi Trang (24 years old, in Quoc Oai district) and the appeal requesting a heavier sentence from the victim's family.

According to the first instance verdict, Trang and Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Giang were both daughters-in-law of the same family in Sai Son commune, Quoc Oai district. In daily life, Trang showed "jealousy" towards Ms. Giang.

Trang repeatedly broke into Giang’s bedroom to steal money. When she borrowed her sister-in-law’s motorbike, Trang made a key, stole the motorbike, took it to a secluded place and abandoned it.

On the evening of July 25, 2016, knowing that only Giang and her three children were sleeping at home, Trang boiled a pot of water, poured it into a basin and threw it on the bed. Trang's actions caused Giang to suffer 29% injuries and her seven-year-old son to suffer 36% burns.

Quoc Oai District People's Court sentenced Trang to six years and three months in prison for two crimes of Intentional Infliction of Injury and Theft of Property.

At the appeal hearing, Trang admitted her actions, but refused to have the last word.

The appellate court determined that the first instance court had fully considered the aggravating and mitigating circumstances, so it rejected the appeals of both Trang and Ms. Giang. In addition to the penalty, Trang must also pay 115 million VND in compensation to the victim.
