The quake was centered 140 kilometers south of the Papua New Guinea town of Kokopo at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometers of the epicenter.

There have been no reports of large waves or damage following the earthquake. According to local officials, the earthquake was far from shore, while the nearby population was quite sparse, so there was no major impact on people.

Today's earthquake was centered in the same area as two earthquakes that struck Papua New Guinea last week. The previous earthquakes were both lower in intensity and deeper than today's. Neither caused damage or tsunamis./.
