Since December, the Obama administration has been asking the UN Security Council to bring Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his supporters “to justice” as soon as possible, the author writes. Such a move was necessary to challenge Russia, which had previously called the text of the resolution unacceptable and was certain to veto it.
However, the US has been largely rejected by other countries. Britain and France, which have traditionally supported the US, have also shown sudden hesitation. Perhaps the UK and France will not take any measures to hold the Syrian government accountable, as they wait for Trump to take office.
While the president-elect has expressed a desire to cooperate with Russia on Syria, it is unlikely that he will seek a conflict with Moscow. This means that international efforts to “punish Assad” are likely to fail, the author concludes.
