Eastern Ukraine is the most mined place in the world.
Eastern Ukraine remains the most mined region in the world at the moment, threatening the lives of more than 2 million people, UNHCR spokeswoman Shabiya Mantu said at a press conference on April 3.
According to UNHCR, the government, humanitarian organizations and parties to the conflict need to expand mine clearance activities in Ukraine, as the eastern regions of the country remain the most heavily mined.
In addition, Ukraine ranks third after Afghanistan and Syria in the number of victims of landmine explosions and so-called unresolved war remnants.

“In the eastern regions of Ukraine, the presence of landmines affects more than 2 million people. Landmines restrict movement and pose a serious threat to civilians moving across the border between government-controlled territories and outside it,” said Mantu.
The presence of landmines left over from the war prevents the full restoration of infrastructure, agriculture, free access to schools and medical institutions.
