Cucumber prices drop, youth group joins in to "rescue"
(Baonghean.vn) - Entering the peak harvest season, cucumber prices in Dien Chau have dropped dramatically, causing difficulties for farmers.
These days, the cucumber fields in Dien Loc commune (Dien Chau) are bustling with people harvesting cucumbers with a mixed feeling of joy and worry. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien in Dien Loc commune shared: My family has 3 sao of cucumbers, this year's yield is over 1.5 tons/sao, higher than other crops, but currently the goods are very difficult to sell because few retailers come to buy the cucumbers.

That is also the common sentiment of dozens of households growing melons here. It is known that a month ago, the price of cucumbers fluctuated from 7,000 - 10,000 VND/kg, but during the harvest season, the price of melons dropped to only 4,000 - 5,000 VND/kg and was still difficult to sell.
Mr. Hoang Sy Minh - Vice Chairman of Dien Loc Commune People's Committee said: The whole commune has 12 hectares of spring melons, on average each household has 1 - 2 sao, many households have about 4 sao. Due to the sluggish market, we are contacting organizations to "rescue" melons for people, minimizing the situation of "good harvest, low price".

For the past 3 consecutive days, youth union members of Dien Chau district, along with units and individuals in the district, have gathered in Dien Loc commune fields to "rescue" cucumbers for the people.
The union members joined hands to help the people harvest and consume the melons, and transport the melons to retail locations. In addition, union officials mobilized fellow countrymen associations across the country to join hands to buy cucumbers for the people. On April 28, 10 tons of melons were transported to the Northern market, over 5 tons were transported to the South; the rest were brought for consumption within the province.

With this method, dozens of tons of farmers' melons were quickly consumed.
Through discussion, Mr. Le The Hieu - Head of the Department of Agriculture of Dien Chau district said: This year, the whole district planted 30 hectares of spring-summer cucumbers, concentrated in Dien Loc and Dien An communes.
This is a high-yield melon crop, nearly 2 tons/sao, safe quality but difficult to consume because currently, the vegetable regions in the North are also focusing on harvesting cucumbers, leading to a lot of unsold goods in the Central region. Currently, we are continuing to promote coordination with units to purchase products for the people.
