(Baonghean) - Since ancient times, Nghia Dan land has been one of the "cradles" of the ancient Vietnamese people. In the course of history, along with the indigenous people, new communities of residents have appeared in Nghia Dan area, the most notable of which are the Tho and Thai ethnic groups migrating from other localities and the Kinh people from the lowlands coming to live and make a living.

From here, generations of Thai, Tho and Kinh people lived together in a harmonious community, together fostering the tradition of patriotism, solidarity, loyalty, diligence, creativity and creating a rich and diverse cultural identity of Nghia Dan people.

Through many dynasties in the history of the nation, in the 21st year of Minh Mang (ie 1840), the administrative organization of Nghe An was rearranged. Accordingly, Nghia Duong district was established on the basis of separation from Quy Chau prefecture. In 1885, the Nguyen Dynasty changed the name of Nghia Duong district to Nghia Dan district until now. Over the past 130 years, Nghia Dan has continuously developed and grown, contributing and maintaining an important role and position in the Northwest region in particular and Nghe An province in general.

An important event of Nghia Dan was in October 1930, at Ru Am cave, Tho Loc commune (now Nghia Duc commune), comrade Vo Nguyen Hien - a cadre of the Provincial Party Committee (later Secretary of Nghe An Provincial Party Committee) organized a meeting to discuss the establishment of a party cell consisting of 5 party members from Tho Loc and Cu Lam communes. This was one of the first party cells established in the mountainous districts of Nghe An. Immediately after its establishment, the cell and later the party committee (established in April 1931) led the people to fight in revolutionary movements, contributing to the common victory, the struggle for national liberation as well as building and defending the Fatherland.

Nghia Dan was identified by the Central Government and Nghe An province as a district with an important strategic position when entering the period of building socialism in the North and was a large rear base along with the Southern frontline to fight the Americans. Many farms and factories were established in Nghia Dan, becoming advanced production models, exploiting and awakening the potential of the red basalt land, creating large-scale goods for export and support for the South. Cadres and party members of Nghia Dan were the core in all production, combat and combat service movements. During the long resistance war against the Americans to save the country, 1,602 children of Nghia Dan heroically sacrificed, 1,978 wounded and sick soldiers left part of their blood and bones on the battlefields and many people were infected with Agent Orange/dioxin.

In recognition of the great achievements and contributions, in 1996, the Party and State awarded the noble title "Hero of the People's Armed Forces" to the people and armed forces of Nghia Dan district.

Since its establishment, the map of Nghia Dan has been adjusted many times. On April 19, 1963, the Government Council issued Decision 52/CP to cut 10 communes of Nghia Dan district to establish Tan Ky district and 3 communes for Quy Hop district. In 1995, implementing Decree 83/CP dated November 25, 1995 of the Government, Nghia Dan established 8 new communes from 5 state-owned farm towns. In 2008, Nghia Dan district continued to separate its administrative boundaries to establish Thai Hoa town. To date, Nghia Dan district has 25 communes and towns.

After the separation, Nghia Dan was full of difficulties and challenges because it almost returned to the starting point of a poor mountainous district. Agricultural production was the main activity, industry - handicrafts and trade - services were still rudimentary, infrastructure was poor, the poverty rate was high, and people's lives were generally low.

In the midst of these difficulties, Nghia Dan has received effective help and support from the Central agencies, the Provincial Party Committee, the People's Committee and provincial departments, branches and sectors. Along with that, the great determination, positivity and initiative in choosing and determining the right direction of the Party Committee and the government; the solidarity and consensus of cadres and party members in overcoming difficulties, Nghia Dan has made its mark in many fields, achieved many results and completed the goals and targets set by the 27th District Party Congress, term 2010 - 2015. The District Party Committee has achieved the title of "Strong" throughout the term. With the formation of a new development center of the Northwest region of Nghe An, it is the basis for Nghia Dan to be selected by the Politburo to build a high-tech agricultural zone in the coming years.

The great achievements and results that the Party Committee and people of Nghia Dan have achieved in recent years have been awarded the First Class Labor Medal by the Party and State, the Best Emulation Flag in 5 years and many other awards by the Government.
