"We want to show our determination to defend the euro and to assume the special responsibilities of Germany and France in Europe," Sarkozy told reporters at the Elysee Palace after talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel. The two leaders also proposed that all 17 countries in the Eurozone commit to maintaining fiscal balance and enshrine this goal in their constitutions by the summer of 2012.

In addition, the two leaders also called for the establishment of a "joint governing body" to help overcome the current debt crisis in the region.

This agency will be headed by current President of the European Union (EU) Herman Van Rompuy./.
