Among the many provisions of the bill are planned amendments to the Russian Constitution. Notably, it is expected to expand the powers of the Parliament and the Constitutional Court, along with a ban on senior officials applying for residence permits in other countries, limits on the number of presidential terms, giving priority to national laws over international agreements and increasing the social responsibility of the state.
The latest information shows that the bill has been passed unanimously with 432 votes in favor. The next meeting to discuss this bill may take place in mid-February.
According to Reuters news agency, Mr. Putin's constitutional reform proposals are considered by many Western opinions to create scope for him to maintain influence after his current term ends in 2024. However, last weekend, Mr. Putin affirmed that he did not support the Soviet-era practice of having lifelong leaders, in office until death.
