The Department of Science and Technology of Thua Thien-Hue province, through the Center for Application of Advanced Science and Technology, successfully implemented the project "Supporting the replication of the model for treating water hyacinth problems using the biological product Micromix-3 to produce bio-organic fertilizer".

The project was implemented in response to the situation in Thua Thien Hue province, where water hyacinth is growing excessively in ponds, lakes, and streams, obstructing water flow and affecting the daily lives of people in the area. In districts and towns such as Quang Dien, Phong Dien, Huong Tra, Huong Thuy, Phu Vang, Phu Loc, etc., water hyacinth grows and reproduces rapidly, clogging ponds, lakes, canals, and rivers; causing pollution and affecting the natural flora and fauna of the aquatic environment.

Local authorities in the province have to spend hundreds of millions of dong each year on removing water hyacinths and clearing waterways before the rainy season to prevent bridges and culverts from collapsing due to weeds and debris.

After harvesting, water hyacinth is placed in compost piles to ensure sufficient weight. The process involves turning and mixing the piles, along with adding Micromic-3 microbial preparation, according to the instructed technical procedures. The most favorable time for this is from May to August (according to the Gregorian calendar).

Within 1-3 months, the compost piles meet the requirements, with good decomposition and breakdown. Based on the results of the dispersed and demonstration models in the project area, initially 250 households have accessed the technical process and benefits of using Micromic-3 to transform water hyacinth into on-site organic fertilizer for their family's agricultural production.

Currently, in the project area, most people use bio-organic fertilizer primarily in vegetable cultivation, with a few using it in flower cultivation (such as in Thuy Van and Thuy Thanh communes, Huong Thuy town) and for growing ornamental plants and fertilizing rice in Huong Vinh commune (Huong Tra town); Phu Da town and Vinh Thai commune (Phu Vang district).

According to local residents, after crops were fertilized with organic biological fertilizer, they showed good growth rates, fewer pests and diseases, higher product quality, and greater yield.

Regarding the flowering plants, they are growing well and producing beautiful flowers (beauty, vibrant colors, healthy, dark foliage, and more flowers), and there are no signs of pest infestation.

Notably, while commercially available bio-organic fertilizers cost at least 1,500 VND, bio-organic fertilizers using Micromic-3 processed from water hyacinth cost only 860 VND/kg; this translates to a saving of 860,000 VND per ton for farmers.

According to statistics from farmers' associations at all levels in the project area, 1,522 cubic meters of water hyacinth have been removed from local ponds, lakes, and rivers; after processing, this has yielded nearly 254 tons of bio-organic fertilizer that meets the required standards.

The Department of Science and Technology of Thua Thien Hue province has requested local authorities to pay attention to and support people with more information about the Micromix-3 biological product, contributing to the widespread adoption of this model. This will double the effectiveness as farmers will have additional organic biological fertilizer to improve soil and significantly improve water quality.
