This winter crop, Ms. Hoang Thi Thu's family, Hamlet 18, Dien Hoang Commune (Dien Chau) only planted 300m2 of L14 peanuts but harvested 80kg of peanuts as seeds for the spring crop. She happily said: "This year the weather is favorable, there is no rain or flooding so the peanuts grow well. The harvest is good so the peanuts are firm and the seeds are bright. Therefore, in addition to using them as seeds for several hectares of spring peanuts, my family also sells them, at a price of about 25 - 30 thousand VND/kg".

The entire Dien Hoang commune has 62 hectares of winter peanuts planted since late August and early September. 10-15 days ago, people started harvesting peanuts in the fields, and it is expected that they will complete the winter peanut harvest in the next few days. Mr. Nguyen Chi Vinh - an agricultural officer of the commune said: "This year's winter crop, the peanut area increased by 7 hectares compared to last year. This is also one of the best crops ever. If in previous years, the peanut yield was only about 1 quintal/sao, this year's winter crop, the average is from 1.2 to 1.3 quintals/sao. Not only ensuring enough seeds for the upcoming planting of 170 hectares of spring peanuts, but also having peanut seeds to sell to the market".

Currently, in key peanut communes of Dien Chau such as Dien Ky, Dien Thanh, Dien Hung, Dien Phong, people are actively harvesting peanuts. This winter crop, the whole Dien Chau district sowed 400 hectares of peanuts, mainly L14 and Nghe An lotus varieties. Although the area did not meet the plan, the yield was high and consistent. According to Mr. Nguyen Xuan Vinh, Head of the District's Agriculture Department, peanuts are always identified as the main, most effective and safest crop in winter crop production. It is one of the "peanut granaries" of the province. With 400 hectares of winter peanuts, and a good harvest like this year, in addition to being used as seeds for over 3,000 hectares of spring peanuts, there is still surplus to sell, giving people a significant additional income. Thanks to favorable weather, the peanuts are firm, bright, and have even kernels. In particular, in Dien Phong commune, there are 8 hectares of L20 peanuts from the program and project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, with a yield of 1.4 - 1.5 quintals/sao.

In Nghi Hop (Nghi Loc), early-planted winter peanuts were also harvested a few dozen days ago. Mr. Nguyen Manh Ha - Vice Chairman of the Commune People's Committee said: The whole commune has 125 hectares of fertile land, but mainly grows spring peanuts, only 24 hectares are used for winter peanuts. This year, for the first time, Nghi Hop planted 5 hectares of autumn-winter peanuts, sown 20-25 days earlier than winter peanuts, with the aim of gradually replacing winter peanuts that often encounter unfavorable weather conditions because the weather gets colder later, while the soil moisture is high, so peanuts often germinate if not harvested early. This area has been harvested since the beginning of November. If in previous years, the yield of winter peanuts usually only reached 70-80 kg/sao, this year, the harvested areas averaged nearly 1 quintal/sao, especially 3 hectares of original L14 peanuts, with a yield of over 1.2 - 1.3 quintals/sao. “This winter crop has been very favorable for peanut growth. When the peanuts are flowering, it is sunny. When the flowers are drooping and spreading, it rains. The amount of rain is just enough for the peanuts to grow and develop well, with many tubers. In areas where L14 peanuts are grown, there are peanut trees with nearly 100 tubers,” Mr. Ha shared.

Nghi Loc district has 4,000 hectares of fertile land, in the spring crop, Nghi Loc's peanut area reaches over 3,000 hectares, in the winter crop alone, there are years when the district's peanut area is over 1,000 hectares. However, in recent years, due to the policy of not expanding the area but only choosing the safest areas for planting, Nghi Loc's winter peanut area fluctuates at 400 - 500 hectares. Producing winter peanuts as seeds for spring crop production is considered to solve many problems. First of all, it overcomes the situation where people have to preserve spring peanut seeds in the old way to make seeds for the spring crop next year, which is both time-consuming and does not ensure the germination rate. Using winter peanuts as seeds not only creates a high multiplication coefficient, but also the efficiency of winter peanut production is very clear because the selling price of peanut seeds is very high, each sao of peanuts on average brings an income of 3 - 4 million VND/sao. At the same time, through the winter peanut production program, the problem of quickly introducing new peanut varieties into production has been solved.

According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Tho - Head of the Department of Agriculture of Nghi Loc district, up to now, the district has introduced many new peanut varieties for experimental planting in the winter crop and selected the L14 peanut variety as the main crop. This winter crop, the district has implemented the L14 purebred peanut breeding program at 3 locations: Nghi Van, Nghi Long and Nghi Hop, with a total area of 15 hectares, with initial very positive results, with a yield of up to 25 - 26 quintals/ha. Currently, people are continuing to harvest winter peanuts. According to the general assessment, although the peanut acreage in Nghi Loc this winter crop is not large, it is a good year, with an expected average yield of about 21 - 22 quintals/ha.
