This spring crop, the rice area and output of our province are both at record highs. To sum up a successful spring crop, two important reasons emerge: seed structure and weather.
Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development - Mr. Nguyen Tho Canh, said: This spring crop, the whole province planted 88,379 hectares of rice/88,500 hectares of the plan. The productivity and output both reached record highs in many recent years. The average rice yield of the whole province reached 65.66 quintals/ha, an increase of 3.66 quintals/ha compared to the spring crop of 2010, the total output reached 580,012 tons. In which, the key rice districts all exceeded the level of 65 quintals/ha, such as Yen Thanh reached 72 quintals/ha, Dien Chau 71.36 quintals/ha, Quynh Luu 68.43 quintals/ha, Nam Dan 66.99 quintals/ha, Nghi Loc 66.18 quintals/ha, etc.

Looking back, the first thing to have a successful spring crop like the past one, first of all, is thanks to the very good seed structure work. Many new and advanced varieties were introduced, replacing old rice varieties with low productivity. In the summer-autumn crop of 2010, our province suffered a severe crop failure due to storms and floods, since then, the province and districts have had policies and mechanisms to support the purchase of hybrid rice seeds for damaged areas. And that is also a reason for the sharp increase in hybrid rice area in the spring crop of 2011. The whole province planted nearly 89 hectares of spring rice, of which hybrid rice was about 62,000 hectares, accounting for 73% of the area. High-yield rice varieties such as Khai Phong No. 1, Nhi Uu 986 occupy the main position, replacing Nhi Uu 838, Khang Dan... Besides, the area of rice varieties with high yield potential and good rice quality such as Syn6, Bio404, PHB71 has increased sharply, high-quality rice varieties such as AC5, Huong Thom No. 1, Bac Thom No. 7 continue to be invested in by people to produce large commodity areas with high output.
Along with the advanced seed structure, according to general assessment, a very important "channel" for spring rice yield to reach a record high is weather conditions. Entering the beginning of the production season, the weather was extremely difficult and unfavorable, with severe cold lasting for the first two months of the year causing over 530 hectares of seedlings and 10,000 hectares of planted rice to die and have to be replanted. However, according to agricultural experts, this is also a condition for the rice plant to undergo a process of inhibition. By March, when the weather is favorable, the temperature is high, and there is enough light, the rice plant takes root, recovers, and grows very quickly, with strong tillering. It can be said that at all important stages of growth and development such as tillering, panicle initiation, and grain formation, favorable weather conditions are encountered, especially in early May, when the rice begins to bloom, and there are showers. Thanks to that, in all districts, rice varieties have had a strong increase in productivity, many areas of Nhi Uu 986 rice, hybrid rice varieties Syn 6, Q.Uu 1, Q.Uu 6 achieved record yields of 8 - 9 tons/ha. Together with timely and proactive pest control work of the agricultural sector, authorities at all levels and farmers, we have had a "clean" spring rice crop, contributing significantly to a successful spring crop.
