First baby dies from meningococcal meningitis
A 5-month-old girl was admitted to the Hospital for Tropical Diseases due to high fever and purple skin. She died after only a few hours and was diagnosed with meningococcal encephalitis.
The baby is the first case of meningococcal meningitis in Ho Chi Minh City since the beginning of the year and also the first death of the year.
The child patient from District 11 was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of high fever, lethargy, vomiting, and hemorrhagic patches on the skin. Test results showed the presence of bacteria that cause meningococcal meningitis. The Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control has isolated the epidemic area and controlled the disease.

According to doctors, this is an acute infectious disease caused by bacteria.Neisseria Meningitidis. This bacteria resides in the throat area and causes disease when conditions are favorable.Respiratory diseases are transmitted by inhaling droplets of respiratory secretions containing pathogens.Meningococcal infection can occur at any age. The two age groups most commonly affected are children between 6 months and 3 years of age and adolescents between 14 and 20 years of age.
The disease progresses very quickly and can cause death within 24 hours.
