The EU will ban the sale of goods such as tear gas and riot gear to Libya to prevent them being used against protesters, diplomats said. The sanctions will be implemented in the coming days.
On February 26, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1970 imposing a travel ban and asset freeze on Muammar Gaddafi, his family members and close associates, and an arms embargo on Libya.
The United Nations Security Council also requested that protest cases be referred to the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Earlier, on February 25, several EU member states, including Cyprus, Malta and Italy, which have close relations with Libya, expressed concern about imposing sanctions on Libya too quickly.
