EU declares double standards on Ukraine and Middle East unacceptable

European Council President Charles Michel said on June 15 that double standards were unacceptable regarding conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East and other parts of the world.

"There is no room for double standards. International law must be upheld at all times, everywhere, without any ambiguity, in Ukraine, the Middle East and everywhere in the world. This is our global responsibility," Michel said at a summit on Ukraine hosted by Switzerland, adding that Kiev must decide when it can start dialogue with Moscow.

Meanwhile, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao told the summit that international law is now often applied selectively, when "some countries oppose occupation in one country, but not in another", and called for all conflicts to be treated with equal importance.

"There are about 65 wars still going on around the world today. Even if they seem foreign to our country, we must not forget them," he said.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed hope that an international agreement will be reached around a proposal to end the war that he could present to Moscow.

In his opening speech, Zelensky said: "We must decide together what a just peace means for the world and how to achieve it in a lasting way. Then it will be communicated to Russian representatives, so that at the second peace summit we can determine the real outcome of the war."
Kiev had earlier said Moscow would be invited to the second summit - a position supported by many countries on June 15.

Meanwhile, a draft communique for the Ukraine summit in Switzerland mentions Russia's "war" against Kiev and calls for respect for Ukraine's territorial integrity. The final communique is expected to be issued today at the end of the two-day summit in the central Swiss resort of Buergenstock. The draft is dated June 13.
The Swiss government said it hoped the summit’s final declaration would be unanimously supported by participants. The document also calls for restoring Ukraine’s control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and protecting Kiev’s access to Azov Sea ports./.
