The drills took place in the East China Sea, south of the Korean Peninsula, "to enhance joint activities and improve combat skills," Japan's Air Self-Defense Force announced, according to Reuters.
Two US Air Force B-1B bombers flew from Andersen Air Force Base on Guam, joining six F-35 stealth fighters, four F-18 multirole fighters and a tanker from US bases in Japan.
The Japanese Air Force deployed four F-15 fighters and one patrol aircraft.
This is the largest exercise in a series of activities aimed at putting pressure on North Korea after its ballistic missile tests. The latest test launch on November 29 used a new type of missile that North Korea said could hit targets in the US, including the capital Washington DC.
