At the 62nd Annual Congress in Budapest, Hungary, on May 25, the International Football Federation (FIFA) approved a decision to pay insurance for all professional players injured while playing for the national team.

The decision will take effect from September 1. The funds will be drawn from FIFA's Insurance Fund, which currently has about 75 million USD (nearly 60 million euros).

The highest insurance payout is $27,000/day and $9.7 million/year depending on the injured player's salary.

FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke confirmed that the player protection program will apply to all top-level international matches taking place between September 2012 and October 2013, as well as football matches within the framework of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

In addition, the European Football Federation (UEFA) will also insure European players when playing for their national teams from May 31 to August 31.

Commenting on this decision, FIFA President Sepp Blatter affirmed that this is an important and right step after what football clubs and federations had to go through in the last World Cup finals.

FIFA currently has a reserve fund of 1.29 billion USD (more than 1 billion euros).

In 2011, the leading international football organization made a net profit of $36 million. In a World Cup year, this profit can reach around $220 million.

Last year, FIFA earned 1.07 billion USD and spent 1.034 billion USD./.
