FIFA to set revenue record thanks to 2014 World Cup

According to auditing and consulting firm BDO, the 2014 World Cup taking place in Brazil next year is expected to set a new revenue record for FIFA, with an estimated figure of up to 5 billion USD.

If reaching the above milestone, the 2014 World Cup will have a revenue increase of 36% compared to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (reaching 3.655 billion USD) and an increase of 110% compared to the 2006 World Cup in Germany (reaching 2.345 billion USD).

BDO said that revenue from television copyright and the strong demand for advertising and sponsorship are the reasons why the World Cup is increasingly profitable.

BDO spokesman Pedro Daniel commented: "The World Cup market continues to grow and this trend promises to continue into the following editions such as the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. TV channels have to spend a lot of money to get copyright but they do business smoothly because they earn back from advertising."

Also according to BDO, the 2014 World Cup will help Brazil's GDP increase by 1% next year.

With increasing revenue and profits, FIFA has also been quite generous in distributing bonuses to teams. Since the 2010 World Cup, the prize money has increased by 1/3 and it is expected that the 2014 World Cup champion will pocket 40 million USD./.
