Nearly 100,000 people died in the Syrian civil war
The Syrian civil war has become the worst refugee crisis since the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
A series of top UN officials on July 17 called on the Security Council to take stronger action to deal with the consequences of the Syrian civil war, as the death toll from the conflict reached nearly 100,000 people.

The UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights, Ivan Simonovic, said the death toll in the Syrian civil war has reached alarming levels. In Syria today, human rights are being seriously violated, while war crimes and crimes against humanity are on the rise.
“More than a month ago, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said that at least 93,000 people in Syria had died as a result of the conflict between March 2011 and April 2013. Among those who died were 6,561 minors, 1,729 of whom were under 10 years old. Children have been recorded as being detained, tortured and forced to join armed groups,” Mr. Simonovic emphasized.
UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonia Guterres said the number of refugees in neighboring countries of Syrians now reaches 1.8 million people, meaning that on average every day up to 6,000 Syrians have to flee across borders to escape the conflict.
Mr. Guterres stressed that the current refugee crisis in Syria could be compared to the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. At that time, up to 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed by the Hutu extremist group, forcing 2 million people to flee the country.
“We have seen a terrifying escalation of refugee flows since the Rwandan genocide nearly 20 years ago. This crisis has been going on longer than any other humanitarian crisis. The Syrian people continue to suffer, especially in the hot summer weather and during Ramadan,” Mr. Guterres said.
UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said humanitarian groups are rushing to carry out aid operations outside Syria's borders to help refugees. Ms. Amos also said the UN will need at least 3.1 billion USD to fund humanitarian operations in countries neighboring Syria./.
