More than HK$15 million (US$1.93 million) disappeared in just minutes as drivers and passersby on Gloucester Road rushed to loot.

But very quickly, the authorities issued an announcement: "Those who picked up the lost money should return it to the police as soon as possible, otherwise they will be charged with theft."

The armored truck that dropped the money was carrying a total of HK$525 million (US$67.64 million) in cash, police said. Three boxes containing HK$15.23 million were lost along the way.

British security company G4S, which transported the money, will be held responsible for the loss.

Sheeta Leung Hui-kwan, a spokeswoman for G4S Hong Kong, said the company had conducted an internal investigation, and initial findings showed the incident was caused by a faulty tailgate latch.
