Traditional meeting of the 271st Heroic Regiment

(Baonghean.vn) -On September 16, 2012, in Vinh City, generations of officers and soldiers of the heroic Regiment 271, from the Northern provinces, held a traditional meeting on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the Regiment's founding. In addition to representatives from 9 provinces, with over 400 veterans, there was also a delegation from Long An province, where the Regiment mainly operated during the period 1971-1975.

Regiment 271 was established from 2 squads 81 and 82 in Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan, making important contributions to the southernmost battlefield of the Central region during the years of resistance against the French. In 1950, the name was changed to Regiment 812 and due to its many achievements, in June 1950, Uncle Ho and the Government sent letters of commendation. After 1954, the Regiment went to the North to regroup, belonging to Division 324, carrying out the task of building and protecting the fatherland in Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa...

From August 1964 to October 1971, Regiment 812 changed its name to Regiment 271, in the formation of Division 341, continuing to fight in Military Region 4, carrying out anti-destructive war by air force and navy of the US Empire. Specifically, it protected Vinh City, the coast and road and waterway traffic routes. There were 2 artillery companies of 85 and 120 mm to protect Ngu Island and Mat Island; 2 battalions of 37 mm anti-aircraft artillery to protect Vinh City and roads in Dien Chau and Nghi Loc; 3 infantry battalions built defense works in the 3 districts of Nghi Loc, Dien Chau and Quynh Luu.

After completing its international duty in Laos, from November 1971 to February 1972, the unit participated in fighting in the Southeast battlefield, in the Nguyen Hue campaign in early spring 1972, destroying the defense line, Northwest, Tay Ninh, National Highway 22, contributing worthily to the historical event - signing the Paris Agreement, forcing the US empire to end its military involvement in South Vietnam, early 1973.

Since then, the Regiment has fought in Long An province and achieved many victories, but also suffered painful losses. In the area, there are currently 6,000 martyrs' graves found, of which more than 5,000 are soldiers of Regiment 271. In 1975, Regiment 271 split into 2 new Regiments (271 and 172) participating in the historic Ho Chi Minh campaign, making glorious achievements. Therefore, in 1976, the Regiment was awarded the title of Heroic Unit of the People's Armed Forces by the Party and State during the anti-American period. In 1992, considering its achievements during the renovation period, the Regiment was awarded the title of Heroic Unit of the People's Armed Forces for the second time.

Promoting the tradition of the unit being twice heroic, today the veterans are enthusiastically building a new life, helping each other to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty, supporting comrades in difficult circumstances. Regarding the work of gratitude in the past 2 years, they have cooperated with relatives to search for martyrs (found over 50 martyrs' remains, built a memorial house in Long An worth 310 million VND; contributed to building a memorial stele in An Ninh Dong, worth 33 million VND).

At this meeting in Vinh, many comrades who are directors and good businessmen, former soldiers of Regiment 271, donated over 50 million VND to support their comrades in difficulty, and gave many other valuable gifts to the comrades present. The meeting also proposed a more active direction for the coming time.
