The former Man Utd defender called the criticism of Chelsea's boring playing style silly, especially when Mourinho's team was very close to winning the Premier League title this season.

Chelsea have been criticised as “boring and dull” after they scored just two goals in three games, including a defensive display in the 0-0 London derby draw with Arsenal last weekend.

But Neville insisted Mourinho's side were simply winners, stressing that no one remembers the attractive teams who failed to win the title.

"It's completely silly to criticize Chelsea," the former England player said while commentating on Chelsea's 3-1 win over Leicester on Wednesday night, April 29.

Neville added: "A lot of people used to say Kevin Keegan's Newcastle in 1996 were beautiful and attractive, but now no one remembers them. People only remember the teams that won the final. You will never be able to win the championship if you try to play brilliantly for a whole season."

Gary Neville was part of the Man Utd team that turned the season around to beat Newcastle and win the Premier League in 1995-96, while Keegan's side finished second despite being ten points ahead of their rivals in the second half of the first half.

Jamie Redknapp, the former Liverpool midfielder and now a pundit for Sky Sports, also agreed that Chelsea were far from being a monotonous side, and insisted that other teams were to blame for this season's lack of excitement.

"People say Chelsea are boring, but the only thing that's boring is that no team this season has really challenged them and competed with them," he said. "Reigning champions Man City levelled the points gap with them at the start of the new year, but then let Chelsea easily make a strong run and establish a safe gap in the title race this season."
