Coffee organizations and associations around the world, including major ones like the Global Coffee Forum and national coffee associations, have expressed serious concerns about the new EU Deforestation-Free Supply Chains (EUDR) law. The law, which is expected to come into effect by the end of 2024, aims to prevent deforestation in the European supply chain of products, including coffee.
The EUDR law poses major challenges for the global coffee industry, especially for smallholder farmers. Coffee organizations are calling on the EU to review some of the law’s provisions to minimize the negative impacts on the coffee industry and ensure its sustainable development.
The EUDR law will have a significant impact on the Vietnamese coffee industry. Vietnam is one of the world's largest coffee exporters and the EU is an important market for Vietnamese coffee. If Vietnam fails to meet the requirements of the new law, Vietnamese coffee products may be banned from being imported into the EU, causing great damage to our coffee industry.
