According to the Import-Export Department - Ministry of Industry and Trade, the high coffee price is due to three main reasons: limited supply, unstable policies from importing countries such as the US, and strong buying power from investment funds.

In the context of the volatile global economy, Vietnam's Robusta coffee is increasingly favored by importers and consumers thanks to its reasonable price.

Experts say the market could change from October and November 2025, when Vietnam begins harvesting its new crop. This is expected to be favorable thanks to stable weather conditions, bringing the prospect of a bumper crop.

Roasters are already facing rising costs as coffee production from Brazil and Vietnam has declined since last year. The pressure has been compounded by a 50% import tax on Brazilian coffee entering the U.S. market.

Many roasters remain hesitant to adjust their prices to account for the new tariffs, fearing that consumers will cut back on spending. Some businesses may be able to rely on existing inventory to sustain operations for part of the fall. Imports were previously subject to a 10% tariff, and Brazilian coffee imported into the U.S. before October 5 will not be subject to the new 50% tariff.

World coffee prices today

On the London Stock Exchange, the online price of Robusta coffee futures contract for September 2025 delivery reached 4,970 USD/ton, down 0.62% (31 USD/ton) compared to yesterday. The futures contract for November 2025 delivery decreased 2.8% (135 USD/ton) to 4,680 USD/ton.

On the New York Stock Exchange, the price of Arabica coffee for delivery in September 2025 increased by 2.35% (9.1 US cents/pound) compared to yesterday, to 396.85 US cents/pound. The contract for delivery in December 2025 increased by 2.28% (8.6 US cents/pound), to 386.1 US cents/pound.

Coffee prices in August 2025 increased sharply. Specifically, the price of Robusta coffee futures for November 2025 increased by 1,484 USD/ton compared to the beginning of the month. The price of Arabica coffee futures for December 2025 also increased by 97.4 US cents/pound. In the domestic market, coffee prices increased by an average of 22,000 VND/kg. Compared to the previous month, Robusta prices increased by 46% and Arabica prices increased by 33%, far exceeding the 5.44% increase in gold prices in August.

Supply shortages and unfavorable weather in Brazil have been the main reasons for the sharp rise in prices over the past four weeks. Robusta coffee inventories on ICE fell to a one-month low of 6,552 lots as of last Thursday. Arabica stocks also fell to their lowest in more than a year, with 710,196 bags recorded on Friday.

The US imposition of a 50% tariff on coffee imports from Brazil has pushed market prices even higher. The new harvest in Vietnam is expected to start in October, but this new source of coffee will only be available on the world market in late November. Domestic supplies are currently very limited and there are almost no significant transactions. Many suppliers are forced to source beans from Brazil or Indonesia to have enough to fulfill contracts.

The coffee market is still facing a number of factors that could push prices higher. Production in Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer, is facing difficulties due to adverse weather.

Growing demand for coffee, especially in Asia, has strained the supply-demand balance. Supply chain disruptions, labor shortages, rising production costs and the impact of import tariffs have also added to the upward pressure on prices.
