Vietnam’s coffee exports in the first two months of the 2024-2025 crop year (October and November) fell 36.6% year-on-year, according to the General Department of Vietnam Customs. This year’s export season started slower due to prolonged rains that delayed harvests, while market demand also eased after strong fluctuations in previous years.
Export activities in January may be slower due to the Lunar New Year holiday on January 29, 2025.
Update world coffee prices
The price of Robusta coffee for January 2025 delivery on the London exchange increased slightly by 0.8% (40 USD/ton) to 5,048 USD/ton. However, the contract for March 2025 delivery increased slightly by 0.49% (24 USD/ton) to 4,959 USD/ton.
On the New York Stock Exchange, the price of Arabica coffee futures for March 2025 delivery decreased slightly by 0.29% (0.95 US cents/pound) to 326.30 US cents/pound; the futures contract for May 2025 delivery decreased by 0.25% (0.8 US cents/pound) to 321.05 US cents/pound.
Robusta coffee prices have increased due to the slower harvest in Vietnam compared to the same period last year. The main reason is the unseasonal rainy weather that lasted until late November and early December.
Robusta production for this year’s crop is currently forecast to range between 26 and 30 million bags. More detailed production reports will be provided as the harvest progresses into 2025.
Meanwhile, Arabica coffee prices also recorded an upward trend thanks to lower-than-average rainfall conditions in Brazil. According to information from the Brazilian Meteorological Agency Somar Meteorologia, Brazil's largest Arabica coffee growing region, Minas Gerais, received 43.6 mm of rain last week, equivalent to 83% of the long-term average.
However, the rise in arabica prices was limited by the weakening Brazilian real. The real fell 1.7% on Monday, only recovering slightly from a record low against the dollar hit last Wednesday. The weaker real has encouraged Brazilian coffee producers to sell more coffee on the market.
