Bean sprouts, sprouts, and susu grow long and smooth thanks to the 'growth stimulant'

From sprouts, bean sprouts to chayote shoots, squash shoots, Malabar spinach... regardless of consumer safety, many producers still use vegetable growth stimulants to make the fastest and most profit.

Stimulate sprouts and bean sprouts with harmful chemicals

On November 13, Hanoi authorities discovered two 15-ton trucks loaded with green beans containing a large amount of growth stimulant chemicals. Notably, truck 29C-215.28 driven by Trinh Quang Doanh (born in 1981, Bac Ninh) was carrying 20 barrels of growth stimulant chemicals, the label of which was printed in Chinese. According to the instructions on the packaging, this is a drug that can help a bean sprout grow 1-2cm in just 4-5 hours. Driver Doanh also admitted that this is a bean sprout growth stimulant.

Previously, many cases of using chemicals to soak bean sprouts were exposed and handled by authorities.

On October 9, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Quang Binh province said it had inspected and discovered that two bean sprout production facilities in Le Thuy district had used chemicals of unknown origin to stimulate bean sprouts to sprout.

On May 7, the Ho Chi Minh City interdisciplinary inspection team also caught two bean sprout production facilities using drugs and growth chemicals of unknown origin.

White chemical compost price, shiny stem, no roots, looks very eye-catching

The above incidents have raised concerns about the quality of bean sprouts on the market. In order for bean sprouts to grow quickly, have fat and white stems, and have few roots, many producers have used growth stimulants to make the fastest and highest profit. According to experienced people, it takes an average of 5 days to produce a batch of bean sprouts using the traditional method, but if using “boosting” drugs, it only takes 2 days to have a batch of white, fat sprouts with no roots.

Technology for growing 'super fast' water spinach

According to Viet Q reporter's records at the vegetable field located in Bo De ward (Long Bien, Hanoi), the whole field is so green that even if you look hard, you won't see a single yellow leaf. According to some people living near the area, the vegetables here are often "drinking" stimulants and a type of medicine used to kill yellow leaves.

Water spinach is "bathed" in pesticides, stimulants,...

A vegetable grower revealed: If you don't spray growth stimulants, you can harvest 3-4 times in one crop, and the profit is not worth much. But if you just spend a few tens of thousands of dong to buy growth stimulants to spray, you can harvest once every 2 days. And the vegetables look delicious and sell very well.

According to regulations, vegetables can only be harvested 10-15 days after being sprayed with pesticides, at which time the pesticide residue in the vegetables is only small and does not affect the health of the user. However, according to the vegetable growers here, only 2-3 days after spraying, people can pick vegetables to sell, as long as the profit is as high as possible.

Spraying pesticides, stimulating spinach

Van Noi Commune (Dong Anh, Hanoi) is one of the largest vegetable granaries in Hanoi. The fields of Malabar spinach here are very fertile. Ms. Lan (a vegetable grower in Van Tri, Van Noi) said that Malabar spinach is harvested almost all year round. Here, the vegetable grower only has to cut a batch every 10-13 days to sell. After cutting and selling, they wait for the vegetables to sprout to be 5-10 centimeters long, then spray them with stimulants and pesticides.

It is very difficult to distinguish between clean vegetables and vegetables contaminated with pesticides.

Ms. Lan affirmed: "Not only spinach but any vegetable, if you want it to be beautiful and quickly sold, you have to spray it with chemicals."

Many vegetable growers say that by spending just a few thousand to buy a package of pesticides and “Chinese” drugs (growth stimulants), the harvest time of Malabar spinach will be shortened. Normally, Malabar spinach is usually grown for about a month before it can be cut and sold once. If the weather is hot and sunny, the time to cut and sell is even longer, the leaves will curl up and look very ugly. But if sprayed with “Chinese” drugs, after a week it can be cut and sold, and the vegetables will be beautiful and easy to sell.

Chayote specialty "bathed" in stimulants

Tam Dao - Vinh Phuc is considered the largest chayote growing area in the country. Chayote here is famous for its delicious, crunchy, and lush green vegetables.

However, recently, due to the immediate large profits, many households growing chayote in the area have not hesitated to spray and water the plant with stimulants every day, which they say can help the chayote specialty have young, plump, shiny shoots with a dizzying growth rate, up to tens of centimeters long each night.

Chayote specialty "bathed" in stimulants

It is known that stimulants have active ingredients in the organophosphate group. These active ingredients are often recommended to be limited in use on vegetables, because the quarantine period is 10-15 days before harvesting. However, a local pesticide seller said that the type of pesticide used by growers is non-toxic, sprayed the day before, the next day the vegetables can be cut and sold normally.

Thanks to the technology of "bathing" with stimulants, chayote growers here earn 3-4 times more profit than normal.

Responding to the press, Dr. Nguyen Thi Nhung, Head of the Department of Medicines, Weeds, and Environment, Plant Protection Institute (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) said that currently, to stimulate growth, sprout quickly to help increase vegetable productivity, many households often buy stimulants.

However, if vegetable growers use stimulants that are too toxic, in high doses, close to harvest date, and do not ensure quarantine time, the remaining pesticide residue in vegetables will exceed the allowable level, causing poisoning to consumers, even with biological stimulants.

According to Ms. Nhung, although the level of pesticide residue in vegetables can cause acute poisoning with symptoms such as nausea, headache, dizziness, diarrhea... or chronic poisoning, which gradually accumulates in internal organs causing dangerous diseases for the body.
