Last year, durian exports reached 3.2 billion USD. However, in the first 4 months of this year, the results have only reached about 20% of the set plan.
One of the main reasons for the slowdown in durian exports is that China has implemented more food safety control measures. This requires time for both people and businesses to adapt, causing congestion and a decrease in export volume.
In addition, Vietnam also faces fierce competition from Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. The early part of the year is the peak harvest season in these countries, leading to oversupply. The process of negotiating, signing and implementing export contracts therefore also faces many obstacles.
Data from border gates shows that in the first four months of the year, only about four durian trucks of Vietnamese enterprises had to turn back because they did not meet the requirements. However, the level of violation was not serious and the goods were still exported, although at a slower rate.
The positive signal is that the number of durian trucks clearing customs at the border gate has increased to 20-30 trucks per day. Prices in the domestic market have also increased.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development emphasized that when durian has become a key export product, the entire supply chain needs to operate professionally, from standards and norms to processes and procedures. The construction of standard growing areas needs to be completed urgently.
Although many cooperatives have focused on product quality and reputation, anxiety still exists as the export market continues to face many prolonged difficulties.
