With US tariff policy still unclear, many importers are cautious about signing new contracts. Shipping costs to Europe and the US have increased sharply in the past week, with increases of 20% to 30%.
Short-term pepper purchasing prices depend on export growth and the stockpiling trend of international processors and traders. Hesitation from buyers makes the market unpredictable.
According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), the export situation in the second quarter of 2025 and the following months will continue to face difficulties due to high pepper prices, putting both exporters and importers under financial pressure. To maintain exports, Vietnamese enterprises need to focus more on markets such as the EU, India and the Middle East, while increasing investment in deep processing and building their own brands.
Meanwhile, in Malaysia, Sarawak remains a hub for the production of high-quality black and white pepper, which is internationally recognized for its distinctive aroma. Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development of Sarawak, said the pepper here is distinguished by its high pungency and purity, maintained through more than a century of farming tradition.
Since 2003, Sarawak pepper has been protected by Geographical Indication (GI), which has enhanced its reputation in the international market. As of 2024, Sarawak still accounts for more than 98% of Malaysia's pepper production. The pepper growing area reached 8,300 hectares, a slight increase compared to the previous year. At the same time, the number of farmers participating in pepper cultivation also increased to 39,300, showing that the industry is still growing steadily.
