According to statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in the first 10 months of 2024, pepper export volume decreased by 1.9% compared to the same period in 2023, but export value increased by 48%.

Specifically, in October 2024, Vietnam exported 18,493 tons of pepper, up 7.9% compared to October 2023. This month's export turnover reached 120.2 million USD, including 99.8 million USD from black pepper and 20.4 million USD from white pepper. The average export price of black pepper was 6,284 USD/ton, down 28 USD compared to the previous month, while white pepper reached 8,029 USD/ton, up 191 USD.

In the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnam exported 219,387 tons of pepper, including 193,892 tons of black pepper and 25,495 tons of white pepper, with a total turnover of more than 1.1 billion USD. Specifically, black pepper accounted for 881.6 million USD and white pepper reached 162.6 million USD. Although the export volume decreased slightly by 1.9% (black pepper decreased by 3.3% and white pepper increased by 10.8%), the export value increased sharply thanks to higher pepper prices compared to 2023. The average price of black pepper in the year reached 4,971 USD/ton (up 1,528 USD) and white pepper reached 6,626 USD/ton (up 1,671 USD).

The United States was the largest import market for Vietnamese pepper, with 62,553 tons, accounting for 28.5% of total exports, up nearly 47% over the same period last year. The following markets included the UAE, Germany, India, and the Netherlands. China was the sixth largest market, but imports from Vietnam fell by 84% compared to the previous year.

World pepper price today

Update on world pepper prices from the International Pepper Community (IPC), at the end of the most recent trading session, IPC listed the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 6,557 USD/ton (down 2.27%), and the price of Muntok white pepper at 9,177 USD/ton (down 0.03%).

Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper prices were at $6,000/ton (down 5%). Malaysian ASTA black pepper prices remained stable at $8,400/ton; the country’s ASTA white pepper prices reached $10,500/ton.

Vietnamese black pepper prices today decreased slightly, trading at 6,200 USD/ton (down 1.61%) for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,500 USD/ton (down 1.54%); white pepper prices at 9,400 USD/ton (down 1.06%).

Today, the pepper export market fluctuated strongly as prices decreased in many countries. The international community also adjusted down the export price of black pepper in many countries.

According to Mr. Hoang Phuoc Binh, Vice President of the Chu Se Pepper Association (Gia Lai), pepper prices in Vietnam have decreased mainly because Indonesia has just entered a new harvest season. In addition, because it is the beginning of the coffee season, many agents are taking advantage of selling their pepper reserves to have capital to buy coffee.

Mr. Binh predicts that pepper prices in the 2025 harvest will be higher than in the 2024 crop (when the highest price reached 160,000 VND/kg). The main reason is that the prolonged heat in early 2024 has greatly affected pepper crop productivity, causing the 2025 output to likely continue to decrease.

Not only in Vietnam, pepper output is also expected to decrease in many other countries. Many pepper farmers in Vietnam have additional income from coffee, durian, etc., so they are not in a hurry to sell immediately after harvest but will wait until prices are high to sell, according to Nong Nghiep Newspaper.

Pepper processing and exporting enterprises said that the amount of pepper in stock in Vietnam is currently very low, while the 2025 harvest is expected to be 1-2 months later than usual and output will decrease due to drought. Indonesia has just finished the 2024 harvest, with abundant supply and continuously falling prices, creating conditions for businesses to take advantage of the opportunity to buy. In addition to Indonesia, Vietnam also prioritizes imports from neighboring countries such as Cambodia to save on transportation costs, instead of importing from distant sources such as Brazil.
