According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA), global pepper output in 2025 is forecast to continue to decrease compared to 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of decline since 2022.
This reflects the fact that pepper is no longer the main crop of many farmers, especially in the context of the significant increase in economic value of other crops such as durian, coffee and oil palm. In addition, climate change with extreme weather events has reduced productivity and increased the cost of maintaining pepper production.
VPSA predicts that China will likely wait until Vietnam's main harvest (after Tet) to start buying again.
Global pepper prices in 2025 are expected to remain high due to reduced supply, while demand in major markets such as the US and Europe remains stable. Pepper use in the food and spice processing industries remains the main driver of the market.
World pepper price today
In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Community (IPC) has updated the prices of all types of pepper traded in the international market on January 18 (local time) as follows:
Indonesia's Lampung black pepper price decreased slightly compared to yesterday to reach 7,113 USD/ton (down 0.41%). In addition, Muntok white pepper price also increased sharply compared to yesterday to reach 9,193 USD/ton (down 0.41%).
Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at USD 6,350/ton.
The price of Malaysian ASTA black pepper increased sharply compared to yesterday, currently at 9,000 USD/ton (up 3.33%). In addition, the price of ASTA white pepper of this country also remained the same compared to yesterday, reaching 11,600 USD/ton (up 3.33%).
Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l reached 6,350 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,650 USD/ton.
Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,550/ton.
Vietnam and Brazil will maintain their positions as the world's two largest pepper exporters in 2024. However, Indonesia has emerged as a significant supplier, especially when Vietnam and Brazil suffered crop failures last year.
In 2025, Brazil’s output is expected to recover, while Indonesia’s output could decline due to investment constraints and unfavorable weather conditions. India, a major consumer, is also expected to see a decline in output due to the impact of floods, which have led farmers to limit investment and liquidate inventories as domestic prices fall.
Currently, Vietnamese pepper is strong in the European market. In 2024, the US increased its import of Vietnamese pepper by 40%. It is predicted that in 2025, demand will decrease because the quantity is sufficient.
