The pepper market last week continued to witness trading sessions with alternating price declines and recoveries. Pepper prices are under pressure from business cash flow shifting to coffee and the strengthening of the US dollar. However, limited pepper supply in the context of the harvest season still a few months away has contributed to keeping pepper prices high.

Extreme weather is becoming a major challenge for pepper growers. According to many farmers, pepper is a crop that is very sensitive to climate change. This year, prolonged drought and low humidity have negatively affected flowering, pollination and fruit set. Some farmers reported that many pepper heads have lost seeds or only set one fruit, causing a serious decline in productivity.

Mr. Nguyen Van Quy, a farmer in Ea Bhok commune, Cu Kuin district, Dak Lak, shared that more than 5 sao of pepper intercropped in his family’s coffee garden is being severely affected by the weather. The situation of pepper clusters losing fruit is common.

Mr. Nguyen Huy Than in Cu Hue commune, Ea Kar district, said that pepper plants in this area encountered a lot of rain during the flowering stage, leading to short and sparse pepper flowers, not achieving effective pollination.

Although pepper prices are currently high, farmers are still worried about the risk of reduced productivity due to adverse weather conditions. According to experts, to grow pepper sustainably, farmers need to follow proper care and fertilization procedures to help pepper plants stay healthy. At the same time, using live poles for climbing pepper is an important solution to help minimize the impact of harsh weather and maintain long-term productivity.

World pepper price today

Update on world pepper prices from the International Pepper Community (IPC), at the end of the most recent trading session, IPC listed the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 6,470 USD/ton (down 0.09%), and the price of Muntok white pepper at 9,055 USD/ton (down 0.09%).

The price of Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper was at $6,000/ton. The price of Malaysian ASTA black pepper remained stable at $8,400/ton; the price of this country's ASTA white pepper reached $10,500/ton.

Vietnamese black pepper prices today decreased slightly, trading at 6,200 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,500 USD/ton; white pepper prices at 9,400 USD/ton.

The International Pepper Community commented that the pepper market this week had mixed fluctuations. While domestic black pepper prices in Sri Lanka increased, domestic and international pepper prices in India decreased.

According to Harris Spice, pepper prices have eased slightly since the beginning of the month. Buyers remain cautious, awaiting further clarity on production in Vietnam and Brazil for the coming crop year.

In addition, the drop in coffee prices has increased speculative activities among traders and growers, affecting domestic pepper prices.

Although pepper imports into China have been low this year, supplies from European countries have increased, making up for the shortfall. Vietnam has now exported more than 200,000 tonnes of pepper, suggesting that most of this year’s output has been absorbed through export channels.

In the medium and long term, pepper prices will depend largely on the production situation in Vietnam in the current crop year, with specific developments expected to become clearer in the coming months.
