In the world market, based on quotes from exporting enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) updated the prices of all types of pepper traded in the international market on May 21 (local time) as follows:
Indonesia’s Lampung black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $7,379 per ton. Meanwhile, Muntok white pepper price also remained unchanged from yesterday at $10,062 per ton.
Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at USD 6,650/mt.
Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,200/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price remained stable from yesterday at $11,900/ton.
Prices of all types of Vietnamese pepper remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l reached 6,700 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 6,800 USD/ton.
Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at USD 9,700/ton.
In the first 15 days of May 2025, Vietnam exported more than 10,500 tons of pepper, earning 74.6 million USD. The US and China markets continue to be the two largest destinations, with volumes reaching 2,521 tons and 1,073 tons, respectively. China is showing signs of a recovery in pepper imports, having previously increased purchases to 1,337 tons in April, 161.6% higher than in March.
On the business side, the leading names in export include Olam Vietnam with 1,277 tons, Phuc Sinh with 1,105 tons and Nedspice Vietnam exporting 927 tons.
In contrast, in the first half of May, Vietnam also imported more than 3,000 tons of pepper, worth about 20.3 million USD. The main importing companies include Olam Vietnam, Nedspice Vietnam and Tran Chau. The main supplies come from Brazil (1,364 tons), Cambodia (1,163 tons) and Indonesia (390 tons).
Although Vietnam still accounts for about 40% of global pepper production and nearly 55% of global pepper exports, imports are now increasing rapidly. The main reason is that the domestic pepper growing area has decreased sharply from 151,900 hectares in 2017 to only about 110,500 hectares by the end of 2024, most of which has been converted to durian cultivation.
The reduction in planting area puts the pepper industry at risk of losing its leading position in the world market, while competitive pressure from countries like Brazil is increasing.
