World pepper price today

Update on world pepper prices from the International Pepper Community (IPC), at the end of the most recent trading session, IPC listed the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 6,470 USD/ton, and the price of Muntok white pepper at 9,055 USD/ton.

The price of Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper was at $6,000/ton. The price of Malaysian ASTA black pepper remained stable at $8,400/ton; the price of this country's ASTA white pepper reached $10,500/ton.

Vietnamese black pepper prices today decreased slightly, trading at 6,200 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,500 USD/ton; white pepper prices at 9,400 USD/ton.

In the global market, domestic black pepper prices in Sri Lanka continue to increase, while pepper prices in general are being strongly affected by the appreciation of the US dollar. This pressure is further increased when the greenback reached 107.49 this week, up 0.75% due to global geopolitical instability.

The strong USD was partly due to investor excitement over Donald Trump’s election as US President. The USD-Index jumped from 104 points to 107 points in just a few weeks, prompting investors to flock to USD-denominated assets such as US government bonds, US stocks, and gold. This increased the value of the USD and negatively affected other currencies, causing prices of agricultural exports, including pepper, to fall.

Domestically, money is pouring into coffee due to high prices, causing traders to need more capital to buy coffee, leading some to sell off pepper in stock.

However, expectations of increased demand during the year-end festival season, along with concerns that supply may slow down as the pepper harvest in Vietnam may be delayed by a month, are expected to help the pepper market recover.
