It is forecasted that the area for pepper and spice cultivation will decrease to about 110,000 hectares in the coming time. The main reasons are unfavorable weather, pests and diseases, along with the increase in prices of many other agricultural products.

Besides, market expansion is facing difficulties, some markets are reducing imports and increasing technical regulations and standards on Vietnamese pepper products.

Therefore, control of production processes, including soil health and crop quality, will become even more stringent.

Vietnam’s pepper and spice industry has a public-private partnership group of eight enterprises, including three international import-export enterprises and five leading domestic producers. This group accounts for 80% of Vietnam’s export output.

The Ministry of Agriculture is implementing projects to develop the pepper industry in a sustainable manner, and the public-private partnership group needs to play an even more important role. Mr. Nguyen Quy Duong emphasized that direct guidance to farmers on cultivation is necessary to maintain export markets, especially in the US, EU and expanding to Halal markets.

The Halal market, with a consumption demand of up to 10,000 billion USD, requires products to meet its own standards. Vietnam already has a Halal certification organization, but to export to this market, businesses and farmers need to be trained in standard cultivation and production processes.
