Although domestic pepper prices have decreased, the export market has grown significantly. According to Mr. Ho Tri Nhuan, Director of Gohan Company Limited, pepper consumption demand in the US in 2024 will increase by 5%. However, the purchase volume from importers has increased sharply by 30-40% due to concerns that prices will continue to rise. This makes it difficult for many export enterprises to sign long-term contracts at lower prices than actual prices, leading to the risk of losses when pepper prices suddenly increase.

It is forecasted that in the second quarter of 2025, China will likely increase its purchase of pepper from Vietnam when the main harvest season begins. Meanwhile, the US may adjust its import pace due to large inventories from last year. If actual demand from China increases as expected, domestic pepper prices are likely to recover quickly, ending the current downward trend.

Although the market is still in the adjustment phase, pepper export prices are showing a strong upward trend, helping farmers expect an upcoming recovery. However, the stockpiling strategy needs to be carefully calculated to avoid risks in the face of unpredictable fluctuations in the global market.

World pepper price today

In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on February 28 (local time) as follows:

Indonesia's Lampung black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $7,318/ton. Meanwhile, Muntok white pepper price also remained unchanged from yesterday at $10,074/ton.

Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,850/mt.

Malaysia's ASTA black pepper price is stable compared to yesterday at 9,500 USD/ton. In addition, the country's ASTA white pepper price is also stable compared to yesterday at 12,000 USD/ton.

Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of 500 gr/l black pepper in Vietnam reached 6,900 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 7,100 USD/ton.

Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,900/ton.

According to Ptexim, last week, pepper consumption demand in major markets such as the EU, US and China remained low.

Pepper exports have been falling steadily since the second half of last year, reflecting the depletion of supplies from the old crop. Meanwhile, the new harvest is taking place later than usual due to adverse weather conditions.

Although some areas have begun harvesting, progress is slow. Unlike previous years, most of the pepper from the 2025 crop is being kept by farmers after harvest and only sold in limited quantities.

The main reason is that coffee and durian prices are more attractive, bringing higher profits, helping farmers have stable income and reducing the pressure of having to sell pepper right after harvest.

In addition, the bankruptcy of many intermediary agents earlier caused farmers to choose to keep pepper at home instead of consigning. This caused the amount of pepper traded in the market to decrease sharply, in contrast to the bustling buying and selling atmosphere in previous harvest seasons.
