According to Ptexim, Vietnam exported about 237,000 tons of pepper in the first 11 months of 2024. However, the expected harvest output decreased, causing current inventories to reach the lowest level in the past 6-8 years. Therefore, the supply in the market became scarce, pushing prices into a volatile state.
The 2025 harvest is expected to be delayed by 1.5 to 2 months due to the impact of climate change, starting late around February 2025. This will put great pressure on raw pepper supply in the first quarter of 2025, when demand continues to increase but supply is insufficient to meet demand.
World pepper price today
Update on world pepper prices from the International Pepper Community (IPC), at the end of the most recent trading session, IPC listed the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 6,679 USD/ton, and the price of Muntok white pepper at 9,115 USD/ton.
The price of Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper is at 6,150 USD/ton. The price of Malaysian ASTA black pepper is at 8,300 USD/ton; the price of this country's ASTA white pepper is at 10,500 USD/ton.
Vietnamese black pepper prices today decreased slightly, trading at 6,200 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 6,500 USD/ton; white pepper prices at 9,400 USD/ton.
In India, pepper harvesting took place amid unfavorable weather conditions, which reduced yields. In contrast, Indonesia recorded a more favorable season in areas such as Lampung, Bengkulu, and South Sumatra with good yields.
Meanwhile, Brazil faced selling pressure due to strong volumes from Para and Espirito Santo, although dry weather early in the season also affected quality and overall output.
After a week of strong price increases that excited many farmers, pepper prices suddenly dropped sharply after just one trading session in early December. This drop was even stronger than the total increase of the previous week, marking an unprecedented fluctuation in pepper prices in over a year.
This strong fluctuation is believed to stem from the impact of the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). This regulation is approaching the time of final decision, creating uncertainty in the market, causing pepper prices to change suddenly.
The volatile price of pepper has not only caused difficulties for farmers but also raised concerns about the stability of the market. With the EUDR likely to have a major impact on exports and the supply chain, the pepper market may continue to face many unpredictable fluctuations in the coming time.
