Pepper prices are on the rise thanks to a drop in global supply, while demand in major markets such as the US, Europe and China remains stable. Pepper production has decreased mainly because farmers have reduced their planting areas over the past 10 years, switching to higher-value crops such as coffee and durian.

Although pepper prices are high, experts recommend against massive expansion of acreage. Instead, the industry should focus on improving product quality, promoting organic farming, controlling diseases, and strengthening links with businesses. These solutions will help pepper develop sustainably, avoiding risks due to cyclical market fluctuations.

2024 is considered a successful year for the Vietnamese pepper industry. Experts believe that the potential for price increases of pepper and spices is still very large in 2025 and the following years. According to the orientation to 2030, the pepper area is expected to remain at around 80,000 - 100,000 hectares, with a yield of 24 - 25 quintals/ha, and an estimated output of 200,000 - 230,000 tons.

World pepper price today

In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in various countries, the International Pepper Community (IPC) has updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on March 6 (local time) as follows:

The price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper continued to increase slightly compared to yesterday, reaching 7,360 USD/ton (up 0.43%). In addition, the price of Muntok white pepper also increased slightly compared to yesterday, reaching 10,220 USD/ton (up 0.44%).

Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price remained unchanged from yesterday at $6,850/mt.

Malaysia's ASTA black pepper price is stable compared to yesterday at 9,700 USD/ton. In addition, the country's ASTA white pepper price is also stable compared to yesterday at 12,200 USD/ton.

Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam remained unchanged compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of 500 gr/l black pepper in Vietnam reached 6,900 USD/ton; 550 gr/l reached 7,100 USD/ton.

Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,900/ton.

By the end of 2024, the pepper growing area will reach 110,500 hectares, with an average yield of 26 quintals/hectare, twice the global average. The total output will reach about 200,000 tons, contributing 1.32 billion USD to export turnover, affirming the important role of the pepper industry in Vietnam's agricultural economy.

Although the pepper growing area is only 15% of the coffee area and 12% of the rubber area, the export value contributes up to 23% compared to the coffee industry (5.6 billion USD) and 38% compared to the rubber industry (3.4 billion USD). This shows that the pepper industry has great potential if invested in the right direction, improving quality and added value.

The development of pepper growing areas according to standards such as VietGAP, GlobalGAP and organic is being promoted in key provinces such as Dak Nong, Dak Lak, Binh Phuoc, Gia Lai, Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Lam Dong, Quang Tri. The goal by 2030 is to have an organic pepper area of 5,000 hectares, accounting for 5% of the total area.

According to Ms. Hoang Thi Lien - President of the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPSA), Vietnam is shifting from exporting raw materials to deep processing to increase value. However, the industry still faces many challenges such as climate change, pressure from pests and diseases, increasingly high quality requirements from the international market and increasing transportation costs. Proactively adapting to these challenges will determine the sustainable development of the pepper industry in the future.
