In 2024, gold prices rose more than 27%, the biggest increase since 2010. The main reasons were the US Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts, strong central bank purchases, and rising geopolitical tensions. These factors pushed gold prices to multiple record highs.
Gold prices are likely to continue rising in 2025, experts say, due to geopolitical risks, rising government debt, and fiscal deficits under the Trump administration. However, the Fed’s slow pace of rate cuts and a stronger US dollar could pose challenges for gold prices.
Next week, the market will pay attention to important US economic data that could affect the 2025 interest rate outlook and Mr. Trump's tariff policy. This information will significantly impact gold prices.
Traders expect the Fed to be cautious about cutting rates in 2025 as inflation remains above its 2% target. There is only an 11.2% chance the Fed will cut rates in January, according to the CME FedWatch Tool.
Gold is considered a safe-haven asset during times of geopolitical and economic uncertainty. However, high interest rates often have a negative impact on gold prices.
Tim Waterer, an analyst at KCM Trade, said that gold prices will rise sharply in 2024 mainly due to expectations of lower interest rates. In 2025, the outlook for US interest rates and Mr. Trump's trade policies will continue to be the main factors affecting gold prices.
Gold will be supported by geopolitical risks, trade tensions, and buying demand from central banks, despite a strong US dollar and the Fed's cautious monetary policy, said Aneeka Gupta, director of macroeconomic research at WisdomTree.
