On the afternoon of June 29, delegations participating in the 2011 National Sports Tournament for the Disabled gathered at the Tan Binh District Sports Center, Ho Chi Minh City to carry out procedures for examining and classifying injuries for athletes.

Swimming accounts for the majority of athletes participating.

This year's National Paralympic Sports Tournament is jointly organized by the General Department of Sports and Physical Training, the Vietnam Paralympic Association and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Ho Chi Minh City.

The tournament was attended by 744 disabled athletes from 25 provinces and cities nationwide and a delegation from Korea. Ho Chi Minh City had the largest delegation with 328 athletes.

According to the regulations of the Organizing Committee: Athletes participating in the tournament must be 15 years old or older and each athlete can only compete in one sport. The tournament will officially open and compete on July 1.

Athletes will compete in seven sports: athletics, swimming, table tennis, badminton, weightlifting, tennis and chess to compete for 587 sets of medals.

Mr. Nguyen Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Head of the Organizing Committee, said that the Organizing Committee has made full preparations and has called for a number of sponsors to support the tournament. Organizing this year's tournament is also a task to select athletes to participate in the Southeast Asian Paragames, after the Seagames, in December in Indonesia.

This year, the number of provinces and cities participating in the tournament is larger, with some new provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta also sending athletes to participate, proving that the sports movement for people with disabilities is receiving more and more attention.
